Accused of “Hating” on Women

The world we live in today.

(Sigh)

So I was watching men’s golf with a small group of family and friends one Spring weekend afternoon. I don’t watch much of it, it’s not exactly my jam, but I do enjoy tuning it in and seeing the locations and scenery from time to time and perhaps have it on while I’m eating; I can focus more on my food, while having some light entertainment in the background.

Women’s golf came on after the men’s. The social setting in the room was such that people were coming and going constantly with no real focus on the TV.

One of the women noticed I was leaving the room when it switched from men’s to women’s golf and blurted out:

“Oh, so you leave as soon as the women come on.”

Always ready for a “fight,” I gave a quick retort:

“NO, I’m leaving because I’m just not interested in women’s golf.”

“Right, because it’s WOMEN,” she responded.

(“Here we go again…” I thought to myself.)

“No. I watch plenty of women’s sports. I’ve watched women’s gymnastics and diving for my entire life.”

(Gymnastics was in my family for most of my life and diving is almost an extension of gymnastics in some ways, translated to a water sport).

“Yeah, of course,” she responds.

“Because you like looking at their legs.”

(“Dammit all,” I thought to myself. She’s trying her darnedest to push me into a corner.)

“No, actually I love looking at their legs. But that’s not the ONLY reason I watch it. I watch it because I’ve watched it since I was a kid, I know the sport and enjoy it, AND I watch the men’s gymnastics as well.”

“Sure” she responds, with a snide attitude.

I wasn’t done.

“Oh, and I ALSO watched women’s hockey this past winter Olympics. The entirety of it. AND I watch women’s softball during the Olympics when they have it,” (that’s how much I do know about it; that they don’t have it every Summer Olympics, and I miss it when they don’t have it).

“And you’ll note that in both of those cases, the women are either just about fully clothed, or ARE fully clothed.”

“I do NOT watch women’s soccer. Because I’m not into it. NOR do I watch men’s soccer.  Because I’m not into it.

“I watch both men’s and women’s tennis equally, and not just because the women are wearing skirts.”

“And for the record, I’m not going to apologize for ogling women’s legs because I’m a man and women’s legs are friggin’ awesome.”

(Unlike countless “leg men” who would rush to apologize as quickly as possible for getting “called out” on what comes 100% naturally to them).

If you’re going to start with me…I’m going to finish.

I remember while the men’s golfing was on, there was an ad featuring how many women are excelling at the sport, and actively encouraging families and communities to introduce golfing to little girls and foster the progress of those who show interest.

…which I thought was absolutely wonderful, and is what any sane and rational person, male or female, should want.

Yet so many people today are so eager to rush to judge others based on misguided self-righteousness.

In the recent past, people seem to have been, and continue to be, losing their minds.

I like to think I’m injecting a little sanity back in.
